The Health of Students with Developmental Disabilities: Lessons from the Future

Dr. Yona Lunsky will present a talk entitled: The Health of Students with Developmental Disabilities: Lessons from the Future. This presentation will focus on what we know about the poor health outcomes of adults with developmental disabilities in Ontario, and the role schools can play in changing that trajectory by preparing students with developmental disabilities and their families to be better health advocates for their future. Dr. Lunsky will talk about work her team has been doing through the H-CARDD Program, looking at provincial level data, and also what she has been learning through her work with health care providers, people with disabilities and their families.

Dr. Lunsky is Director of the Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre, Director of the Health Care Access Research and Developmental Disabilities (H-CARDD) Program and a senior scientist at CAMH. She is Professor and Developmental Disabilities Lead in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and Adjunct Scientist at ICES.  Dr. Lunsky has focused her research on the mental health needs of individuals with developmental disabilities, and their families. She is the principal investigator of several studies examining clinical and systems issues related to health services. She is also involved in a number of projects focused on improving primary, emergency and mental health care, and on addressing the needs of families.
